SCALIA SAID WHAT?!: Conservative Justice Has Gun Rights Groups on Notice
Suffering the slings and arrows of gun-control fanatics after an incident like the Aurora movie massacre is something 2nd Amendment groups are used to.
But when Larry Pratt, executive director of the Gun Owners of America (GOA), saw the quiver that produce one of those arrows this past weekend, it not only took him off guard, it compelled him to open his calendar for interviews right away to speak out on the topic.
The remarks, uttered on the most recent broadcast of Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace, came from none other than Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia—an otherwise stalwart conservative on the Court—who said the Constitution allows room for Congress to regulate certain guns.
Scalia is a Constitutional “originalist,” or one who subscribes to the belief that, while the Supreme Court should rule based on the actual text of the Constitution, it should also do so within the context of the time in which it was written.
Within that framework, Scalia refers to the time of the Founding Fathers when there was a ban on “frightening weapons” and recognized “locational limitations” on where firearms could be carried.
Pratt is itching to respond, saying, “People need to know about this. Only Justice (Clarence) Thomas is anywhere close to being an ‘originalist’.”
